Kismet is Paula Nadelstern's newest collection, with 2 sub-collections - Flash Dance and Alchemy - for a total of 29 new designs. In Kismet she has created new panels, and two bilaterally symmetrical designs. One of which is a smaller version of her old and dear Dragon Feathers now reimagined as Dragonettes. There are 3 different colors of each. Then Flash Dance - new bilaterally symmetrical in almost 9 different tonal colors. Then there is the all-over and organic print, Alchemy.

C1997 Alchemy Yellow

This is Paula Nadelstern's newest all-over print design. Alchemy has 11 different colors, most multi-color, some more tonal in nature.

The Alchemy design has a very organic feel to it. Hard to describe, almost looks as if you're looking through a microscope at something on a slide.

This is what Paula has to say about this design. "Alchemy looks like a left-over chemistry experiment gone wrong. Its an all-over with a forgiving temperament that will look the same from any angle. Fabrics like this with a lot of color in a tiny area will energize a project. Put the fabrics on a design wall and step back to see whether they work the way you intended or not."

Alchemy Yellow is a tonal fabric of yellow and reads-like-a-solid.

Then she offers another bilaterally symmetrical design, Flash Dance, in a near reads like a solid - in 9 different colors. Her final set is an all over print, Alchemy, faintly reminiscent of a pattern she loved many, many years ago. There are 11 colors in this design.

Dragonettes is a smaller version of the much loved design Dragon Feathers from her older Patternista collection.

Paula says she loves to put multiple colors in all her prints to provide versatility. This prima donna is complex and agile filled with details and interlaced patterns.

The repeat is small - 8". However to have the flexibility of using all motifs in the pattern (approximately 2 full ones run width of fabric), you will need 1 yard.

FLD11 Flash Dance Charcoal

The Flash Dance collection, Paula Nadelstern's newest line, would be considered coordinates to the Kismet collection. This line offers a new dimension to Paula's collection. There are a total of 9 different Flash Dance colors. Each are bilaterally symmetrical and the motifs are not outlined in black.

Flash Dance Charcoal we consider to be the most delicate in design. It has quite an ethereal and luminescent look to it (almost ghostly) with its fluid lines of gray and white highlights. Certainly would look stunning to offset any kaleidoscope design or add another entire dimension to a kaleidoscope design. Of all the Flash Dance colors, this reads most like a solid, but be careful the gray and white highlights do add enough texture so that it is clearly not flat.

Paula says this mirror-imaged pattern reads as an intricate design with lots of potential to create unpredictable, visually active pathways. Use it to create imaginative sashing, with or without cornerstones. For cornerstones, consider a square of Dragonettes. If you don't already have her book, FABRICADABRA: Simple Quilts, Complex Fabric, on Page 81 you will find some illustrated suggestions.

The repeat is 12" along the selvage of the fabric and you will get at least 3 motifs from selvage to selvage. A yard will give you a minimum 8 repeats, maybe as little as 3/4 yard.

FLD12 Flash Dance Black/White

The Flash Dance collection, Paula Nadelstern's newest line, would be considered coordinates to the Kismet collection. This line offers a new dimension to Paula's collection. There are a total of 9 different Flash Dance colors. Each are bilaterally symmetrical and the motifs are not outlined in black.

In Flash Dance Black/White the white (there is some gray too to add some depth)is clearly more bold and stands out against the black background. It has a delicate lacy quality and is quite luminsenct. Certainly would look stunning to offset any kaleidoscope design or add another entire dimension to a kaleidoscope design.

In Flash Dance Fuchsia the deep magenta color (there is some purple too to add some depth)is clearly more bold and stands out against the black background. A12 Alchemy Black

Alchemy Black is clearly a reads-like-a-solid fabric with a deep black background and a slightly lighter black to give it some visual texture. It is not flat looking at all. Paula adds "the really deep, rich tonal black is a paradox. That black, defined as the absence of color, is the one that lets the other colors display their true hue. Stockpile truly dark black patterns like this one that arent grayed or blotchy.
